Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the NDA’s Bihar Assembly election campaign from Karpoori Gram, the birthplace of the celebrated Socialist leader Karpoori Thakur.
The visit paid homage to Thakur’s lifelong work in social justice and reservation policies for backward classes, highlighting the NDA’s outreach to Bihar’s historically marginalised communities.
PM Modi has consistently recognised Thakur’s contributions to society. Last year, the PM Modi-led government awarded Bihar’s socialist icon the Bharat Ratna.
Earlier this year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw laid the foundation for Karpoorigram Station with a ₹3.30 crore allocation, further enhancing the village’s connectivity and prominence.
The Prime Minister’s visit reinforced the NDA’s commitment to honouring local leaders while strengthening its grassroots presence.
Karpoori Gram, formerly Pitaunjhia in Samastipur district, was renamed after Thakur’s death in 1988 to honour his role as ‘Jan Nayak’ or people’s leader.
Launching the campaign here signalled to regional leaders, caste representatives, and local communities that the BJP respects historical icons and addresses local concerns, blending development narratives with social outreach.
Karpoori Thakur, twice Chief Minister of Bihar, is remembered for implementing backward class reservations and championing social equity.
During the anti-Emergency movement, he collaborated closely with Jayaprakash Narayan and pursued policies to uplift marginalised communities, including the Mungeri Lal Commission recommendations.
His legacy remains influential in Bihar’s caste-driven politics, particularly among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs).
According to recent surveys, OBCs and EBCs form over 63% of Bihar’s population, with EBCs constituting around 36%.
With 112 sub-castes, these groups play a decisive role in roughly 120 Assembly constituencies, including regions like Mithila, Magadh, and Seemanchal.
Political parties, including the RJD and JD(U), have historically relied on EBC support, while the NDA has implemented welfare schemes to consolidate its base among these communities.
By inaugurating the campaign from Karpoori Gram, PM Modi conveyed that the NDA intends to balance Bihar’s developmental agenda with its social justice heritage.
The visit reinforced the party’s outreach to backward classes while countering opposition claims to exclusive custodianship of Bihar’s marginalised communities.
The campaign launch at Karpoori Gram symbolises the NDA’s dual focus: promoting economic development and safeguarding social equity, aiming to build a prosperous and inclusive Bihar for the future.
