‘PM Modi Is My Biggest Idol’: Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar Gets Emotional During Video Call

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar became emotional after receiving a video call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, during which the Prime Minister enquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery.

Machchhar, who is recovering at a hospital in the UAE after suffering serious injuries during a Flydubai flight, told PM Modi that he was his biggest idol and someone he had always looked up to. He said the call made him extremely proud and that he had never imagined getting an opportunity to speak with the Prime Minister.

During the conversation, Machchhar recalled the moments inside the cockpit and told PM Modi that he recites the Hanuman Chalisa whenever he faces difficult situations. He said he remembered the prayer when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed him as he struggled to protect passengers.

The Prime Minister praised Machchhar’s courage and presence of mind, crediting his actions with helping save more than 170 people on board. He described the incident as one that could have resulted in a major catastrophe.

PM Modi later spoke to Machchhar’s mother, Geeta Ben, and praised the values and teachings, including those from the Bhagavad Gita, that shaped his upbringing.

The Prime Minister assured Machchhar and his family of all possible assistance, including medical support during his recovery.

The attack took place on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite being seriously injured and collapsing, Machchhar managed to operate the cockpit door latch and open the door.

The move allowed passengers to enter the cockpit and overpower the attacking co-pilot. Machchhar’s quick response helped prevent the situation from escalating further and protected more than 170 people on board.
