Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tributes to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, describing him as one of modern India’s finest leaders who embodied intellect, public service and moral conviction.
In a detailed article, the Prime Minister said Dr Mookerjee dedicated his life to national service and remained unwavering in his commitment to India’s unity, integrity and progress.
Recalling Dr Mookerjee’s life, PM Modi said that although he was born into a distinguished family of educationists and intellectuals, he chose a path of sacrifice over privilege.
Despite suffering personal tragedies, including the loss of his infant child and wife, Dr Mookerjee remained devoted to serving the nation and confronting challenges ranging from colonialism and communalism to humanitarian crises.
PM Modi said Dr Mookerjee’s unwavering commitment to India’s unity defined his public life, highlighting his role in keeping West Bengal within India during Partition and advocating Jammu and Kashmir’s full integration.
He added that the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A honoured his legacy. The Prime Minister also praised Dr Mookerjee’s reforms as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
PM Modi highlighted Dr Mookerjee’s contributions to education, industry and democracy, noting that he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, promoted industrial self-reliance and championed democratic values.
He also praised his humanitarian work during the Bengal Famine and urged the youth to draw inspiration from his ideals in building a strong, united and self-reliant India.
