PM Modi Highlights Textile Sector’s Rise As Key Employment Generator

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India’s textile sector has transformed into a powerful engine of employment and inclusive growth, moving beyond its traditional image to become a key pillar of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Referring to an article by Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh, the Prime Minister highlighted how the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and newly signed Free Trade Agreements are creating the next wave of jobs across the sector.

India’s textile resurgence is being driven by robust domestic demand and rising consumption. With a population of over 140 crore, India remains one of the world’s most resilient textile markets.

Moreover, the domestic textile market has grown from around ₹8.4 lakh crore to an estimated ₹13 lakh crore in just five years.

Consumption trends further underline this momentum, with per capita textile consumption nearly doubling over the past decade—from about ₹3,000 in 2014–15 to over ₹6,000 in 2024–25—and projected to rise to ₹12,000 by 2030.

Exports have mirrored this demand-led expansion. Textile and apparel exports rose from ₹2.49 lakh crore in 2019–20 to nearly ₹3.5 lakh crore in 2024–25, marking around 28 per cent growth in the post-COVID period.

The rebound highlights India’s ability to rapidly scale manufacturing and convert export growth into jobs. The Minister also emphasised the PM MITRA Park scheme, under which the government expects investments of about ₹18,500 crore.

The government has approved seven PM MITRA Parks across seven states, with each park expected to attract around ₹10,000 crore in investments and generate nearly three lakh jobs, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global textile hub.
