PM Modi Hails Fish Farmer’s Role In Transforming Jharkhand’s Gumla District Through Aquaculture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted a powerful story of rural revival from Gumla district in Jharkhand.

Once known for Maoist activity and migration, the area has witnessed a major transformation thanks to the quiet determination of a local youth, Om Prakash Sahu.

Addressing the nation in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme, PM Modi narrated Sahu’s inspiring journey.

A resident of Basia block, Sahu once faced the threat of violence and isolation. However, instead of falling into the cycle of extremism, he chose the path of development through fish farming.

His decision not only changed his own life but also influenced many others in the region.

PM Modi said, “If the path is right and there is trust in the mind, the lamp of development can be lit even in the most difficult circumstances.”

Aquaculture Sparks Change

With support from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Sahu received training, infrastructure, and financial assistance to begin fish farming. He gradually built fishponds and encouraged others in his village to follow suit.

Today, more than 150 families in Basia, including many former Maoist supporters, have adopted aquaculture as a sustainable livelihood.

As a result, the village has seen reduced migration and improved living conditions, with employment now available locally.

PM Modi used this example to highlight the importance of grassroots initiatives supported by central schemes.

He stressed that targeted development, when combined with local leadership and community participation, can reshape even the most troubled regions.

The story of Gumla, he said, symbolises the strength of India’s youth and the real impact of self-reliance.

“This is the new face of development, where courage and policy come together to create opportunities,” the Prime Minister said.

As India prepares to celebrate its 78th Independence Day,  PM Modi’s remarks carried a deeper message. True freedom, he noted, lies in the ability of citizens to take control of their destinies, turning adversity into opportunity.

The transformation of Gumla is now a shining example of how peace and prosperity can emerge from regions once known for unrest.

Om Prakash Sahu’s story, rooted in resilience and aided by government support, serves as a model for young people across the country.
