Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday affirmed the Centre’s commitment to improving railway infrastructure in Bihar.
The announcement followed a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs meeting, chaired by PM Modi, which approved a ₹2,192 crore project to double the 104 km railway line from Bakhtiyarpur to Tilaiya.
“We are committed to enhancing rail connectivity in Bihar. In this direction, today our government has approved the doubling of the Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya railway line section. This will benefit the people of the entire region as well as pilgrims and tourists,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
The project, spanning four districts, will notably connect key destinations such as Rajgir (Shanti Stupa), Nalanda, and Pawapuri, thereby attracting pilgrims and tourists nationwide.
Furthermore, multi-tracking works will improve rail access for approximately 1,434 villages, around 13.46 lakh residents, and two aspirational districts, Gaya and Nawada, according to officials.
In addition, the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan aligns the initiative with its focus on integrated, multi-modal connectivity and efficient logistics.
Authorities stated that the project will thus facilitate the seamless movement of people, goods, and services.
The Bakhtiyarpur-Tilaiya route is particularly vital for transporting commodities such as coal, cement, clinker, and fly ash.
Moreover, the project will accommodate an additional 26 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) of freight traffic through capacity augmentation. Multi-tracking will consequently ease operations, reduce congestion, and enhance infrastructure on one of Indian Railways’ busiest sections.
Additionally, the Railways, as an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport, will support climate goals and reduce logistics costs.
Officials emphasised that these rail projects are therefore in line with PM Modi’s vision of a ‘New India’ and will promote comprehensive regional development.
Improved connectivity will help residents become more ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) and create employment opportunities across Bihar.
