PM Modi Expresses Sorrow Over Passing Of Renowned Singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra

Padma Bhushan awardee and celebrated classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday at 4.15 AM in Mirzapur.

The veteran musician had been unwell for some time, and doctors admitted him last month to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi after he experienced chest problems and a minor heart attack.

During his hospital stay, doctors moved him to the ICU and diagnosed him with a chest infection and anaemia. They discharged him a few days ago after he showed signs of recovery.

Authorities will bring Pandit Chhannulal Mishra’s mortal remains from Mirzapur to Varanasi by 11 a.m. so people can pay their last respects. Family members will conduct the final rites in Varanasi at 7 PM.

He remained dedicated throughout his life to the enrichment of Indian art and culture. Along with taking classical music to the masses, he also made an invaluable contribution to establishing Indian tradition on the global stage.”

The Prime Minister added, “It is my good fortune that I always received his affection and blessings. In the year 2014, he was also my proposer from the Varanasi seat. In this hour of grief, I express my deepest condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!”

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra played a pivotal role in popularising Indian classical music, blending the traditions of the Thumri, Khyal, and Hindustani styles.

Known for his soulful renditions and mastery over rhythm and melody, he inspired generations of musicians and music enthusiasts across India and abroad.

He received the Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his outstanding contribution to Indian classical music and was later honoured with the Yash Bharti Award by the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
