Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a tour of Tamil Nadu, during which he paid visits to several temples. A highlight of his journey included offering prayers at the Sri Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, where he also took a symbolic dip in the sea.
The PMO reported that Prime Minister Modi extended his journey to the Sri Ranganathaswamy and Rameshwaram temples, participating in worship ceremonies at both temples.
Commencing his temple visits, Prime Minister Modi began at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli. During his visit, he was seen feeding jaggery to an elephant named Andal, seeking its blessings afterward. In the evening, the Prime Minister proceeded to the shores of Rameshwaram, immersing himself in the sea. This sacred site holds historical significance, as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama sought passage from the sea during Tretayuga. In the mythological account, Lord Rama, using the Divyastra on his bow, created a way to build a bridge over the ocean when Samudra Dev did not appear. This event led to the praise of Lord Shiva, resulting in the naming of the place Rameshwaram.
According to Indian mythological history, Rameshwaram’s existence dates back approximately 9 lakh years, and its beach is revered as sacred by devotees. Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the ritualistic dip and bath at this historically significant site adds a contemporary touch to the ancient traditions and cultural heritage associated with Rameshwaram. The visit reinforces the connection between political leadership and spiritual practices, showcasing the importance of cultural heritage in the fabric of the nation.
