PM Modi Elevates Assam’s Bagurumba Dwhou Dance Into Global Spotlight

Bagurumba, often referred to as the ‘dance of butterflies,’ is a traditional Bodo folk dance. Its fluid, nature-inspired movements symbolise harmony, peace, joy and unity.

Traditionally performed during festivals like Bwisagu, the dance reflects the deep cultural identity of Assam’s Bodo community.

During his recent visit to Assam, Prime Minister Modi attended the Bagurumba Dwhou celebration in the presence of state leadership and community dignitaries.

He personally witnessed the grand performance and lauded the artistes for their dedication and skill.

PM Modi described the spectacle as a vibrant expression of India’s plural cultural heritage.

The Prime Minister also shared visuals of the event on his official social media platforms.

The content quickly went viral, attracting over 20 crore (200 million) views and helping the traditional dance reach a global audience.

This surge in online engagement has significantly boosted Bagurumba’s visibility and cultural resonance worldwide.

Government officials and cultural commentators say this reception underscores India’s growing cultural influence on the global stage.

By leveraging social media and high-profile participation, the Modi administration has effectively positioned Assam’s indigenous art form as a symbol of national cultural pride and soft power.
