On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Haldia Bulk Terminal, dedicated to the nation as a next-generation facility on the Hooghly River.
The terminal features full mechanisation, advanced conveyor systems, and a 2,000-tonne Railway Wagon Loading System (RWLS), enabling direct ship-to-train cargo evacuation.
This reduces port dwell time, lowers logistics costs, and enhances supply chain efficiency for the steel, aluminium, and power industries in the eastern states.
The HBT, located within the Haldia Dock Complex under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, operates under a 30-year DBFOT concession by HDC Bulk Terminal Ltd.
With a dedicated 1.54 km railway line, modern automated stockyard management, and refurbished jetty facilities, it exemplifies multimodal infrastructure designed to streamline bulk cargo handling.
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO of APSEZ, said, “By eliminating jetty dumping and reducing cargo loss, we are ensuring cleaner, safer, and more sustainable operations, while boosting the industrial supply chains of West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand.”
The east coast accounts for roughly 60 per cent of India’s dry bulk imports, including coal, bauxite, and limestone.
The Haldia Terminal is therefore positioned as the most efficient maritime entry point for these resources, reducing turnaround times and supporting the Prime Minister’s vision of lowering logistics costs through modern infrastructure.
The project directly supports India’s Sagarmala programme and PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, both aimed at enhancing multimodal port connectivity and strengthening national industrial supply chains.
Haldia Bulk Terminal represents a key step towards integrating ports, railways, and industrial networks for sustainable economic growth.
