PM Modi Congratulates C Joseph Vijay After Tamil Nadu CM Oath Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated C Joseph Vijay after he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and expressed hope for continued cooperation between the Centre and the state government.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on taking oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Best wishes for his tenure ahead. The Central Government will keep working with the Tamil Nadu Government to improve the lives of people.”

Vijay took the oath at a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy. Nine ministers also joined the new Council of Ministers.

The swearing-in marks a major political turning point in the state, ending nearly six decades of alternating rule by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The TVK-led alliance secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, crossing the majority mark required to form the government.

Though the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party, it initially fell short of a majority.

Political uncertainty ended after support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League. Earlier, the Congress, CPI and CPI(M) had also backed the Vijay-led alliance.

Following the backing from allies, Vijay met Governor Arlekar and submitted letters of support.

The Governor subsequently invited him to form the government and directed him to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before May 13.
