C Joseph Vijay Sworn In As Tamil Nadu Chief Minister In Historic Political Shift

Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. His appointment marked a historic political transition in the state.

The development also ended nearly 60 years of alternating rule by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay at a ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Nine ministers also took the oath as part of the new Council of Ministers.

Several national and regional leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony. The attendees included Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, film personalities, party workers, and thousands of supporters.

Chennai Police enforced elaborate security arrangements, intensified vehicle checks, and imposed strict access controls around the venue.

Special seating arrangements were made for prominent guests. Seats in the front row were reserved for Vijay’s parents, veteran filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, and Shobha Chandrasekhar. Actor Trisha Krishnan and her mother were also seated in the same row, drawing significant attention from fans and the media.

Vijay assumed office after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led alliance secured support from 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly. The alliance crossed the majority mark of 118 in the Assembly.

The breakthrough came after support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League, alongside earlier backing from Congress, CPI, and CPI(M). Governor Arlekar has directed Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before May 13.
