PM Modi Condoles Mukul Roy’s Passing; Remembers His Public Service

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed sorrow over the demise of senior West Bengal politician Mukul Roy, recalling his vast political experience and dedication to public life.

In a condolence message shared on his official social media handle, the Prime Minister described himself as pained by Roy’s passing.

“Pained by the passing of former Union Minister Shri Mukul Roy Ji. He will be remembered for his political experience and efforts to serve society. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” he wrote, alongside an old photograph from Roy’s tenure with the Bharatiya Janata Party between 2017 and 2021.

Other Leaders Pay Tribute

Roy’s death prompted condolences from leaders across the political spectrum. Abhishek Banerjee, General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress, described his demise as the end of an era in Bengal’s political history.

He described Roy as a founding pillar of the party who played a key role in strengthening the organisation in its early years.

Banerjee also extended his condolences to Roy’s family and admirers, praying for his eternal peace.

Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, also expressed deep sorrow at Roy’s passing.

In his message, he conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of Roy’s soul.

Meanwhile, youth CPI(M) leader Satarup Ghosh recalled Roy’s candid admission in the past that the Trinamool Congress and the BJP were ‘two sides of the same coin’ in West Bengal politics, reflecting on his complex and eventful political journey.

Mukul Roy, former Union Railway Minister, passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata early Monday. He was 73. His son, Subhranshu Roy, confirmed that he died shortly after 1.30 am following prolonged medical complications.

Once the second-in-command of the Trinamool Congress and a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Roy played a key role in shaping West Bengal politics.

His association with both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP marked a significant political journey, leaving a lasting legacy of experience and influence.
