Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire incident at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, which claimed eight lives.
Extending his condolences, he prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the devastating blaze.
“The loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated.
The fire broke out early Monday in the neuro ICU ward of SMS Hospital, causing chaos as thick smoke spread rapidly across the floor.
Patients and their attendants panicked as hospital staff rushed to evacuate those in critical condition.
Many items, including medical equipment, documents, and stored materials, were destroyed in the fire.
Hospital in-charge Jagdish Modi confirmed that a short circuit was the likely cause of the fire.
“We tried to do our best to evacuate people. Patients were shifted to nearby wards despite the panic. Our team, including doctors and nurses, worked tirelessly to ensure everyone’s safety,” he said.
Firefighters arrived promptly after receiving the alert and managed to bring the blaze under control within two hours.
Due to dense smoke, rescue teams had to break windows to ventilate the area and access the source of the fire.
Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph reported that the neuro ICU ward suffered extensive damage, with parts of the ceiling collapsing. “It was extremely challenging to evacuate patients, but our combined efforts ensured their safe relocation. The cause will be confirmed after the forensic report,” he stated.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel and Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham, visited the site to assess the situation.
The Chief Minister assured full support to the affected families and directed authorities to provide all necessary medical assistance to the injured.
The state government has launched an investigation into the incident to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of hospital infrastructure.
Prime Minister Modi’s message of condolence underscores the gravity of the tragedy and the government’s commitment to ensuring swift relief and rehabilitation for the victims and their families.
