PM Modi Chairs High-Level Strategic Meeting With Rajnath Singh, S Jaishankar & Service Chiefs

In a significant diplomatic and military development, India and Pakistan agreed on Saturday to halt all firing and military operations across land, air, and sea. PM Narendra Modi led a high-level security meeting at his residence on Saturday to review the national security situation.

The decision came following a series of escalatory incidents and India’s assertive response under Operation Sindoor.

The meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

Military chiefs—Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi—were also present, along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

India Launches Operation Sindoor In Response To Pahalgam Attack

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for a brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians. As part of the operation, Indian forces destroyed nine terror infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Following India’s offensive, Pakistan responded with a series of unprovoked escalations using artillery and drones, escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

DGMOs Agree To Ceasefire Across All Domains

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed the media that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM on Saturday. Both sides agreed to cease all military actions on land, at sea, and in the air starting 5:00 PM IST the same day.

“Today, instructions have been issued on both sides to implement this agreement. The Director General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12 at 12:00 PM to review the status,” Misri said.

Jaishankar Reaffirms India’s Zero Tolerance For Terrorism

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the ceasefire on platform X, stating, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”

In a joint press briefing earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Misri characterised Pakistan’s recent military behaviour as ‘escalatory’ and ‘provocative’. He confirmed that India responded effectively and proportionately to all hostile acts.

Ceasefire Seen As Strategic Outcome Of India’s Military Posture

While a ceasefire is now in place, Indian officials underscored that the outcome is not a gesture of goodwill from Pakistan, but rather a response to India’s decisive and targeted military actions.

The government remains clear in its position: terrorism will be treated as an act of war, and future provocations will invite strong retaliatory measures.

India’s leadership emphasised that peace is welcome, but not at the cost of national security.
