PM Modi Celebrates Bhupen Hazarika’s Legacy; Highlights North East’s Role In Nation-Building

During a visit to Guwahati, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to the North East for its significant contributions to India’s independence and national unity.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, PM Modi acknowledged the region’s unsung heroes and its enduring patriotic spirit.

At the heart of the ceremony was a cultural tribute to Bhupen Hazarika—an icon whose music stirred the soul of the nation.

PM Modi recalled Hazarika’s powerful role during the 1962 Indo-China war, saying his patriotic songs gave hope and courage to both soldiers and citizens during a time of deep crisis.

“Those songs infused courage and energy into the nation, and that spirit is alive even today,” he stated.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Regional Pride

The Prime Minister highlighted how national initiatives such as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav have revived the stories of the North East’s contribution to India’s independence.

Events like the Asthalakhmi Mahotsav in Delhi showcased the North East’s rich literary and artistic traditions, placing them firmly in the national consciousness.

Drawing a connection between the cultural strength of the past and the resilience of the present, PM Modi referenced Operation Sindoor as an example of India’s unwavering determination to protect its borders.

He declared that the patriotic fervour of Assam and the wider North East continues to shape the country’s journey towards building a ‘New India’.

The Prime Minister announced that the government would complete a museum dedicated to Bhupen Hazarika’s life and work within a year.

Additional projects will also aim to document and promote the artistic and social vision that defined Hazarika’s career.

Cultural Heritage and National Identity

In his concluding remarks, PM Modi described Assam’s culture and patriotism as inseparable from the Indian identity.

He emphasised that the region’s pride, creativity, and contributions are not just part of history but are also guiding forces in modern India’s aspirations.

“New India will never spare its enemies,” the Prime Minister said, underscoring that the strength of the North East continues to be vital to the country’s security, heritage, and future.
