On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi exercised his franchise in the Vice-Presidential election at New Delhi’s New Parliament Building.
Shortly after voting, PM Modi shared on the social media platform X, “Voted in the 2025 Vice President election.”
Members of both the NDA and the INDIA bloc were casting their votes at the Parliament.
The election is a contest between the NDA’s nominee, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, and the INDIA bloc candidate, former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
For confidentiality, all parliamentarians were provided with identical pens to cast their votes.
Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, a current Rajya Sabha member, also arrived in a wheelchair to participate in the voting.
Vote counting will take place later in the day, with results expected to be declared in the evening.
The election carries significant political importance, as the Vice President of India also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a role central to the functioning of Parliament.
Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, along with Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, named as the official election agents for the Vice-Presidential poll.
The electoral college for the Vice Presidential election consists of 781 members, including 542 elected Lok Sabha members and 239 Rajya Sabha members (233 elected and 12 nominated, with six vacancies across both Houses).
Parliamentarians cast their votes through a secret ballot, with each vote carrying equal weight as per parliamentary procedure.
A candidate needs a minimum of 391 votes to win.
The post of Vice President fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on 21 July due to health concerns, on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
Political analysts are closely monitoring the election. While the NDA holds a numerical edge in the combined strength of both Houses, attention remains on potential cross-voting and the final outcome later in the day.
