Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the Somnath Temple as a timeless emblem of India’s ‘indestructible spirit’ and enduring ‘civilisational consciousness’ while addressing the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations at Prabhas Patan in Gujarat.
After participating in sacred rituals at the temple, the Prime Minister said Somnath reflected India’s remarkable ability to rise repeatedly despite invasions and destruction across centuries.
Beginning his speech with chants of ‘Jai Somnath’ and ‘Har Har Mahadev’, PM Modi said the atmosphere at Prabhas Patan carried divine energy and spiritual magnificence.
“This divine presence of Mahadev, this beauty, the showering of flowers from the earth and the sky, the radiance of saffron flags, the magnificent presentations of art, music and dance, the chanting of Vedic mantras, the continuous recitation of the Shiva Panchakshari in the sanctum sanctorum, and along with all this, the roar of the sea waves… it feels as though the entire creation is speaking together: Jai Somnath! Jai-Jai Somnath!” PM Modi stated.
The Prime Minister said the event commemorated 75 years since the consecration of Lord Mahadev at the reconstructed shrine and symbolised a ‘thousand-year journey of immortality’.
PM Modi recalled repeated invasions by rulers, including Mahmud of Ghazni and Alauddin Khilji, stating that Somnath always emerged stronger because invaders failed to understand India’s spiritual foundations. He paid tribute to Raja Bhoj, Raja Bhimdev I, Ahilyabai Holkar, the Gaekwads of Vadodara and Jam Sahib Maharaja Digvijaysinh Jadeja for preserving the temple’s legacy.
Highlighting development, the Prime Minister said that projects such as the Sea Viewing Path, Tourist Facilitation Centre, and rejuvenation initiatives strengthened Somnath’s prominence as both a spiritual and a tourism destination.
PM Modi asserted that the Somnath Temple proves that faith may face challenges but can never be defeated.
