Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attended the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, marking 75 years since the reconstructed Somnath Temple was inaugurated in 1951.
Calling the occasion a milestone in Bharat’s civilisational journey, the Prime Minister shared visuals from the celebrations on social media. He also described the visit as a blessed experience.
A video posted by PM Modi showed him walking with folded hands through a ceremonial pathway lined with devotees dressed in yellow, playing the damru and performing shanknad. He also highlighted the spiritual atmosphere at the temple, noting the participation of large numbers of devotees in the celebrations.
Before attending the religious ceremonies, the Prime Minister held a roadshow in Somnath after arriving from Jamnagar, where he had stayed overnight following his visit to Gujarat on Sunday. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi accompanied him during the event.
Thousands gathered along the 1.5-km route from the helipad to Veer Hamirji Circle near the temple to welcome the Prime Minister.
Supporters waved flags and raised slogans during the roadshow. Artists also performed traditional cultural dances at various points along the route. Performers from states including West Bengal took part in the programme.
At the temple complex, PM Modi participated in several religious rituals, including jal abhishek, dhwaj puja and maha puja.
The ceremony also used holy water brought from 11 sacred pilgrimage sites across the country.
Traditional religious rites, Vedic chants and ceremonial flag hoisting formed part of the celebrations.
Helicopters showered flower petals on the temple as devotees and dignitaries gathered at the extensively decorated premises. Authorities also tightened security arrangements across the district due to the Prime Minister’s visit and the large public turnout.
Later in the day, PM Modi will likely address a public gathering at Sadbhavana Ground in Somnath.
