PM Modi Calls Passage Of Waqf Amendment Bill ‘Watershed Moment’ For Socio-Economic Justice

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Friday, calling it a ‘watershed moment’ that will benefit marginalized communities, especially Muslim women and Pasmanda Muslims.

PM Modi expressed that the bill would bring transparency and accountability to the Waqf system, which had long been associated with a lack of oversight.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister emphasized, “This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity.”

PM Modi said the new laws represent a step forward in the quest for socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth for all citizens.

PM Modi Thanks MPs For Their Contributions

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all the Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the passage of both the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill.

PM also acknowledged their efforts in strengthening the legislation and emphasized the significance of the extensive debate and dialogue that shaped the bills.

Sharing on X, “Gratitude to all Members of Parliament who participated in the Parliamentary and Committee discussions, voiced their perspectives, and contributed to the strengthening of these legislations,” Prime Minister wrote.

The Prime Minister also extended a special thank you to the people who provided valuable input to the Parliamentary committee, underscoring the importance of public consultation in lawmaking.

Waqf System Reform To Protect Rights

PM Modi pointed out that the Waqf system, in its previous form, had severely harmed the interests of Muslim women, the poor, and Pasmanda Muslims due to its lack of transparency and accountability.

With the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the Prime Minister stated that the new system would ensure better safeguards for people’s rights and promote transparency in Waqf management.

“For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability. This especially harmed the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims, and Pasmanda Muslims. The legislations passed by Parliament will boost transparency and safeguard people’s rights,” he added.

Moreover, PM Modi also emphasized the government’s aim, which is to prioritize the dignity of every citizen and build a stronger, more inclusive India.

He said, “We will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. On a larger note, we remain committed to prioritizing the dignity of every citizen.”

Opposition Criticizes The Waqf Bill’s Passage

While the government celebrated the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the opposition expressed strong dissent.

Congress President and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the government’s stance on the bill, calling it ‘negative’.

Kharge stated, “It is their interpretation; we kept our views on the bill in front of them. They have taken a negative stand, and they are taking it forward.”

Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan called the passage of the bill ‘unfortunate’ and argued that it was not in the best interests of the nation or the Constitution.

She accused the government of targeting a specific community rather than serving the broader interests of the nation.

Rajya Sabha Approves The Bill After Heated Debate

The Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the early hours of Friday following a marathon debate that lasted more than 12 hours. The Rajya Sabha approved the Bill with 128 votes in favor and 95 votes against.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the results of the vote, stating, “Ayes 128 and Noes 95, Absent zero. The Bill is passed.”
