Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged India to broaden its presence across Olympic disciplines.
Speaking virtually at the Khelo India Dialogue, PM Modi said the country must develop athletes in sports where it has traditionally lacked representation.
PM Modi said limited participation directly affects India’s overall medal prospects. He noted that India entered only 13 sports at the 2012 Olympics and missed more than 20 disciplines.
The Prime Minister highlighted surfing and sports climbing as areas with untapped potential. He said India’s extensive coastline, mountains and varied terrain could support talent in water, mountain and winter sports.
Prime Minister Modi called for district-level sporting ecosystems tailored to different disciplines. He said grassroots opportunities would play a crucial role in preparing athletes for the 2036 Olympics.
The Prime Minister stressed that Olympic preparation must go beyond infrastructure. India must identify and develop athletes capable of qualifying for and competing at the Games.
PM Modi outlined a nationwide talent hunt for children aged five to 15.
The initiative, announced from the Red Fort on Independence Day, will identify youngsters with sporting potential and match them with suitable disciplines.
PM Modi said authorities should not only consider which sports children enjoy. They must assess which disciplines best match their abilities and train them accordingly.
The Prime Minister pointed out that several countries win medals in sports where India has little or no participation. He further said India must acquire expertise in these disciplines to expand its medal prospects.
“Therefore, we have to create such opportunities in different districts, where a special sports ecosystem can develop,” Prime Minister Modi said.
PM Modi assured young athletes that the government would provide the necessary assistance throughout their sporting careers.
“I assure all of you that whatever support you need, the government will stand shoulder to shoulder with you,” he said.
