PM Modi Calls For Stronger Water Management, AI-Based Data Governance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired the valedictory session of the two-day national-level Departmental Summit on Water, organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

The summit marked the first in a planned series aimed at strengthening the spirit of Team India and deepening cooperative federalism among states and Union Territories.

Addressing Ministers and senior officials, the Prime Minister praised the intensive deliberations. He stressed that the summit’s actionable, time-bound outcomes require continuous review, learning and follow-up.

PM Modi made clear that the summit should not remain a one-time event but evolve into an ongoing mechanism for collective action on water security.

Emphasising Jan Bhagidari, PM Modi called for promoting ‘Jal Utsav’ to build public awareness around water conservation and turn it into a sustained people’s movement. He further urged wider adoption of water-saving technologies.

Prime Minister Modi suggested dedicated exhibitions and workshops to expose Indian manufacturers and stakeholders to global best practices and help them develop and scale efficient solutions.

The Prime Minister called for robust water data governance, recommending that water-sector data be systematically consolidated, managed, analysed and put to effective use, with artificial intelligence deployed for uniform data collection and analysis. He further proposed structured inter-state study visits involving public representatives, officials and farmers to enable practical learning and replication of successful interventions.

PM Modi called on urban local bodies to prepare for population growth and rising water needs. He further suggested organising similar ‘Chintan Shivirs’ for urban local bodies.

The Prime Minister advocated making de-silting a regular programme with defined criteria and SOPs, alongside rigorous monsoon preparedness for dam safety and awareness among school students through curriculum integration.

PM Modi further urged strengthening water management education in universities and stressed anticipatory planning for using treated water in agriculture and industry.

Drawing on his experience as Gujarat Chief Minister, PM Modi said systematic planning and capable officers and resources can turn water scarcity into an opportunity.
