Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have reviewed key bilateral and global priorities during a detailed telephone conversation, with artificial intelligence cooperation and United Nations reform emerging as central themes.
According to an official readout from the Brazilian presidency, President Lula expressed his intention to attend the upcoming AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, scheduled for mid-February.
Both leaders also centred the discussion on preparations for his State Visit to India from February 19 to 21. During the visit, they will advance cooperation across multiple sectors.
The call, which lasted around 45 minutes, allowed the two sides to align expectations for the visit. It also provided an opportunity to outline deliverables that could strengthen the India–Brazil strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Modi and President Lula agreed to prioritise collaboration in several key areas. These include defence, trade, health, science and technology, energy, biofuels, critical minerals, and rare earths.
These sectors are seen as crucial to deepening economic and strategic ties between the two emerging economies.
Both leaders underlined that enhanced cooperation in these fields would support long-term growth and resilience, while also reinforcing South–South collaboration.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of the Brazil–India Business Forum, scheduled to take place during the State Visit.
Private sector participation from both countries was welcomed to help translate political momentum into tangible economic outcomes.
In addition, President Lula referred to the planned inauguration of the ApexBrasil office in New Delhi, signalling Brazil’s intent to strengthen its institutional and commercial presence in India.
Beyond bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on international developments. They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council.
They reiterated support for multilateralism, democracy and global peace, while also stressing concern over ongoing conflicts, including the situation in Gaza.
India and Brazil are both active members of groupings such as BRICS. They have consistently advocated for greater representation of emerging economies in global decision-making.
President Lula is expected to participate in the AI Impact Summit, and his participation is likely to bolster India’s efforts to position New Delhi as a hub for discussions on artificial intelligence. The summit will focus on inclusive, development-oriented dialogue, particularly from a Global South perspective.
