PM Modi Approves Fertiliser Subsidies For Rabi 2025-26 To Support Farmers’ Income

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of the Department of Fertilisers for fixing nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates on phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers for the upcoming Rabi season 2025–26.

The decision, taken in the interest of India’s farming community, aims to ensure the availability of key fertilisers at affordable rates while improving agricultural productivity and farmers’ income.

According to official estimates, the tentative budgetary requirement for the Rabi season 2025–26 will be approximately ₹37,952.29 crore — an increase of ₹736 crore over the allocation for the previous Kharif season.

The move reflects the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the welfare of annadatas (food providers) and supporting sustainable agricultural growth.

Ensuring Affordable Fertilisers for Farmers

Announcing the decision on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said, “We are committed to the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters across the country. In this direction, our government has taken a significant step by approving subsidies on phosphorus and potash fertilisers for the Rabi season of 2025-26.”

He added that this measure would not only ensure the availability of fertilisers at affordable prices but also enhance farmers’ earnings by reducing input costs and improving soil productivity.

Subsidy Coverage and Rates

The approved subsidy will cover Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and NPKS grades — which include nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and sulphur.

The nutrient-based subsidy framework ensures that support is provided per kilogram of nutrient content, encouraging balanced fertiliser use and sustainable soil health.

This decision ensures that fertilisers are available to farmers at subsidised, reasonable prices across India.

The measure will also contribute to stabilising the domestic fertiliser market and reducing dependence on imported raw materials, particularly phosphatic and potassic compounds.

Supporting Agricultural Growth and Self-Reliance

The government’s fertiliser subsidy policy underlines its dual focus on affordability and sustainability.

By maintaining stable input costs during the Rabi season, farmers can plan for major crops such as wheat, mustard, pulses, and barley with greater confidence.

Officials from the Department of Fertilisers stated that the timely approval of the NBS rates for Rabi 2025–26 will ensure uninterrupted supply chains and help farmers access quality fertilisers ahead of the sowing period.

The initiative aligns with the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, promoting self-reliance in agriculture and rural prosperity.

The step is expected to boost productivity, enhance incomes, and strengthen India’s position as a leading producer of essential food grains.

With this Cabinet approval, the government continues its efforts to build a resilient and farmer-centric agricultural ecosystem.

The move forms part of long-term reforms that aim to improve agricultural sustainability, ensure fair prices, and support millions of farmers who form the backbone of India’s economy.
