On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of Pochishe Boishakh, remembering the Nobel laureate as a timeless literary and cultural figure who shaped India’s intellectual and artistic heritage.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi described Tagore as a writer, philosopher, poet, educationist, and artist of extraordinary brilliance. He said Gurudev gave voice to humanity’s deepest emotions and strengthened society through fresh ideas, creativity, and cultural confidence.
The Prime Minister added that Tagore’s thoughts continue to inspire and guide people across generations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also honoured Tagore on his birth anniversary. He said the poet inspired the spirit of freedom through literature, music, and philosophy during India’s colonial period.
The Minister praised Tagore’s works for carrying messages of liberty, humanism, and universal brotherhood. He further highlighted Tagore’s celebrated work Geetanjali, saying it offered humanity a deeper sense of spirituality and sensitivity.
Shah also noted that through ‘Jana Gana Mana’, Tagore gave expression to the unity and dignity of the nation.
Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is observed every year on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh, known as Pochishe Boishakh. This year, West Bengal is observing the occasion on 9 May.
Born in 1861 at Jorasanko Thakurbari in Kolkata, Tagore became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.
Widely known as the ‘Bard of Bengal’, Rabindranath Tagore also wrote the national anthems of India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
