On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian Coast Guard on its raising day, calling it a strong protector of the nation’s seas, ensuring the safety of both its waters and citizens.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Today, on their Raising Day, we laud the Indian Coast Guard for safeguarding our vast coastline with bravery, dedication and relentless vigilance. From maritime security to disaster response, from anti-smuggling operations to environmental protection, the Indian Coast Guard is a formidable guardian of our seas, ensuring the safety of our waters and people.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the ICG on its foundation day. He commended the force’s steadfast courage and patriotism in protecting India from any threats to its maritime borders.
“Greetings to the Indian Coast Guards personnel on foundation day. The nation is proud of your unwavering courage and patriotism that shield Bharat against any aggression on our maritime boundaries. My salutations to the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation,” Shah posted on X.
The Indian Coast Guard, established on 1 February 1977, initially formed to combat smuggling by sea, a significant obstacle to India’s domestic economy.
The Indian Coast Guard Day was later declared by the Indian Parliament on 18 August 1978.
Over the years, the ICG has evolved into a robust maritime law enforcement and search-and-rescue force, with jurisdiction over India’s territorial waters, exclusive economic zones, and contiguous zone.
From its humble beginnings with just seven ships, the ICG now boasts a powerful fleet of 151 ships and 76 aircraft.
With the motto ‘Vayam Rakshamah’ (We Protect), the ICG ensures the security of India’s vast maritime zones.
The Coast Guard operates 55 to 60 surface platforms and 10 to 12 aircraft daily to monitor and protect the country’s waters.
