PIL In Supreme Court For Structural Audit of Bridges In Bihar

On Friday, a PIL was filed before the Supreme Court, urging a comprehensive structural audit of all bridges recently completed, under construction, and existing across Bihar.

The plea, filed by advocate Brajesh Singh, calls for immediate action by the Bihar government to establish a dedicated body of high-level experts tasked with ongoing monitoring and maintenance of these vital infrastructural assets.

Citing recent incidents of bridge collapses within the state, the PIL highlights a critical need for stringent oversight and proactive measures to prevent future disasters.

The petition stated, “The back-to-back collapse of bridges in Bihar underscores a blatant disregard for safety protocols and the urgent need for systematic monitoring.”

The petition argues that these incidents cannot dismiss as mere accidents but constitute preventable manmade disasters.

Bihar, known for its susceptibility to floods, faces a significant challenge in safeguarding its infrastructure.

The petition underscores that 73.06% of Bihar’s geographical area is flood-prone, intensifying the urgency for robust infrastructure management.

The plea emphasizes the necessity for the Supreme Court’s intervention to protect lives and mitigate risks associated with bridge failures.

Furthermore, the PIL seeks directives for the Bihar government to implement policies akin to those established by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for real-time monitoring and maintenance of bridges.

This proactive approach aims to ensure the structural integrity and safety of Bihar’s bridge network, crucial for the state’s socio-economic development and public safety.

The Supreme Court is likely to consider the PIL, which addresses critical concerns regarding infrastructure management and public safety in Bihar, in the coming weeks.
