‘People Will Remember This’: PM Modi Praises Lovlina Borgohain Over India Map Issue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Commonwealth Games silver medallist Lovlina Borgohain for objecting to a distorted map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow, saying people would remember her gesture for a long time.

PM Modi referred to the incident while meeting India’s Commonwealth Games medallists following their return from Scotland. He asked the Assam boxer about her interaction with the restaurant’s management.

Lovlina explained that she noticed the distorted map while the Indian boxing team celebrated its success at the Games.

Despite the festive occasion, Lovlina politely raised the issue and asked the restaurant to correct the image.

PM Modi praised her awareness and said her decision to recognise the map’s significance during the celebrations made the incident extraordinary. He added that the video of her intervention would remain in people’s memories.

The incident occurred during a celebratory dinner after India’s boxing contingent delivered a historic performance in Glasgow.

The team won 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver. Lovlina secured silver in the women’s 75kg category.

During the dinner, Lovlina noticed that a map of India displayed on the restaurant’s menu excluded the Northeast.

As someone from the region, Lovlina told the staff that the omission had hurt her sentiments. She also pointed out that another map displayed outside the restaurant had excluded the Northeast.

Lovlina requested the management to keep the concern in mind and display the country’s map correctly in future.

The restaurant subsequently corrected the map after she brought the matter to its attention.
