Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month: Director Gulia Reiterates Homi Bhabha Hospital’s Commitment to Pediatric Cancer Care

As September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), reaffirms the institution’s commitment to comprehensive care for childhood cancers. He spoke at an event organized by the Pediatric Oncology Department, where young patients participated in drawing, painting, singing, and dancing activities alongside doctors and staff.

Supportive Programs Enhance Patient Experience

Dr. Gulia emphasized the hospital’s holistic approach beyond clinical treatment. “We provide supportive programs to ensure comfort for children and their families during their stay,” he said. Facilities include a Dharamshala (rest house), crèche services, psychological counseling, and educational guidance for children throughout their treatment.

Dr. Gulia stated, “We are committed to saving every child’s life. We will ensure financial support and logistical assistance for their complete treatment.”

Addressing the Global Disparity in Cancer Treatment

In India, around 50,000 to 100,000 children receive cancer diagnoses annually, yet only 20-30% access appropriate care. While survival rates in Western countries reach about 80%, low- and middle-income countries like India see only 50-60% for 5-year survival rates. Delayed diagnoses and limited access contribute to this disparity.

Dr. Seema Gulia, a senior specialist at HBCH&RC, explained, “We offer comprehensive care for all childhood cancers. Our specialized team includes pediatric oncologists and support services such as dietary assistance and counseling.”

Pediatric cancer expert Dr. Nidhi Dhariwal added that advanced treatments like bone marrow transplants and financial assistance are available through partnerships with organizations and government schemes.

September serves to raise awareness about childhood cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember those lost. Early detection is crucial for improving outcomes, making public education on warning signs essential. Ultimately, every child deserves a future free from the shadows of cancer.
