The Delhi Commission for Women has issued notifications about alleged sexual harassment by a passenger on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai on Wednesday after taking notice of a video becoming viral on social media. The guy allegedly attempted to take lewd pictures of a female flight attendant and another passenger.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Delhi Police have received notices, DCW chief Swati Maliwal announced on X (previously Twitter).
The Delhi Commission for Women has taken unilateral notice of a video that is making the rounds on the social media site Instagram alleging alleged sexual harassment by a traveller. According to the notice, the event allegedly took place aboard SpiceJet Flight No. 157, which was travelling from Delhi to Mumbai on August 16, 2023.
According to the viral footage, a passenger was allegedly trying to take lewd photos of a female flight attendant and his female companion. It has been reported that his mobile phone included offensive images of the women travelling on the plane when it was searched.
The DCW has requested a copy of the FIR filed in the case, information about the apprehended suspects, and a thorough action-taken report in the notice it has sent to the Delhi Police. The police should provide justifications, the commission ruled, if the accused had not been taken into custody.
Details regarding the passenger’s treatment have been requested from the DGCA, along with information regarding whether the incident was submitted to the Internal Complaint Committee in accordance with the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act or any other committee. Additionally, the DCW has stated that if this wasn’t done, reasons should be provided.
By August 23, both the police and the oversight body for aviation must supply the information.
