Paan Will Remain Banarasi Forever! Langda Mango Also Bagged GI Tag of Varanasi

Finally admitted to the Geographical Indication (GI) club, Varanasi’s Langda mango and Banarasi Paan can now be recognized by their place of birth. On March 31, Ramnagar Bhanta (brinjal) and Chandausi’s Adamchini Chawal (rice) received the tags from the GI Registry, Chennai.  The GI tag’s recognition of these goods is a noteworthy accomplishment for those involved in their production and trade.

Banarasi Paan And Varanasi’s Langda generate revenue worth 25,500 Cr

All four products are associated with horticulture and agriculture, according to Dr. Rajnikant, a GI expert who had been working on the project for a considerable amount of time. A crucial part in getting the GI tags was performed by the Uttar Pradesh government and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

According to him, more than 20 lakh people work in the trade of the four goods, which generates an estimated Rs 25,500 crore in revenue annually. He claimed that out of the 20 goods for which the government had submitted GI tag applications, 11 made it into the GI club.

In the upcoming days, over 1,000 farmers, according to Singh, will receive GI-authorised registrations, allowing them to use the GI tags lawfully. Additionally, this would stop imitation goods from being sold, which would eventually benefit both the producers and the consumers.

Banarasi Thandai to get the same TAG

He anticipated the tags would soon be given to Banarasi Thandai, Banarasi Lal Peda, Tirangi Barfi, and Banarasi Lal Bharwan Lal Mirch as well.

Under the One District One Product (ODOP) program, the Uttar Pradesh government is working to market unique local goods like Banarasi sarees and metal crafts and secure GI tags for them.

The government and NABARD worked together with the Varanasi Horticulture Department, Ishani Agro Producer Company Limited, Kashi Vishwanath Farms Company, Namami Gange Farmers Producer Company Limited, and Jaya Seeds Company Limited.
