A suspected case of food poisoning triggered panic in Gaya after over 40 people reportedly fell ill following a Tilak ceremony in Dhana Bigha village under Gurua block on Friday night, officials said.
According to local authorities, a large number of villagers had gathered for the ceremony when several attendees began experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and restlessness shortly after eating. What was initially considered minor discomfort escalated rapidly as more villagers reported similar symptoms.
Most patients were admitted to the Community Health Centre Gurua, while others sought treatment at nearby private clinics.
Health officials said ambulances were rushed to the village after information about the incident was received.
Doctors said emergency medical treatment was initiated immediately to stabilise the affected individuals.
Dr Harendra Kumar said medical teams are actively monitoring all patients. Another doctor, Nitish Kumar, confirmed that the symptoms are consistent with food poisoning.
Among those affected are Sunita Devi (45), Premni Devi (44), Roshan Kumar (17), Anand Kumar (22), Ramesh Ram (45), Rahul Raj (28), Akash Kumar (30), Kundan Kumar (25), and Ankush Kumar (10), all residents of Dhana Bigha village.
Officials confirmed that no critical cases have been reported and all patients are currently stable.
Residents alleged that the food served during the ceremony may have been spoiled or contaminated, leading to the sudden illness.
The Health Department has launched an investigation into the incident. Officials are expected to examine food samples to determine the exact cause of the outbreak and identify any negligence.
The incident has sparked concern among villagers, with locals demanding strict action against those found responsible.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored to prevent further escalation.
