India’s onion prices are skyrocketing once more. The kitchen essential now retails for Rs 60–90 per kg, depending on the location, after prices increased by 2X in the last week. In response, the government brought back its buffer stock and is currently offering onions at steep discounts of Rs 25 per kg from booths it has set up in 170 cities and 685 centers.
The government has implemented a number of policies to combat the spike in onion prices, such as increasing imports and releasing onions from its buffer stock. Since the second week of August, onions from the buffer stock have been regularly distributed in major consumption centers across the country.
Via mobile vans run by NCCF and NAFED, onions are also supplied to retail customers at a discounted price of Rs 25 per kg.
To further demonstrate its resolve to keep the market stable, the Center recently announced that it plans to add 2 lakh metric tons of onions to the 5 lakh metric tons of onions it currently has on hand for the buffer.
With the amount of stored Rabi 2023 onions decreasing, the implementation of a Minimum Export Price (MEP) has been praised as a wise decision to guarantee sufficient supplies of onions for domestic consumers at reasonable prices.
