No Brahmin Candidates Nominated By Major Parties In Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In a significant political development before the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, leading parties have refrained from nominating candidates from the Brahmin community.

Key players, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Indian National Congress, have all excluded Brahmin representation.

Brahmins account for nearly 3% of the state’s population. In contrast, Other Backward Classes dominate with about 71%. Dalits represent close to 20%, while Scheduled Tribes form around 1.1-1.2%.

The general category stands near 4%. These figures shape electoral calculations.

This marks the first instance in 35 years that the AIADMK has not allotted a ticket to a Brahmin candidate.

The BJP, contesting 27 seats within an alliance, has also avoided nominating Brahmins despite support from the Tamil Nadu Brahmin Association.

The DMK and Congress have adopted a similar approach, reflecting enduring Dravidian ideological influence rooted in the teachings of Periyar E V Ramasamy.

The political sidelining of Brahmins dates back to the Self-Respect Movement initiated in 1925. This movement portrayed Brahmins as symbols of caste hierarchy.

It shaped Dravidian ideology, which has dominated since the DMK’s 1967 electoral victory. Power gradually shifted to non-Brahmin communities, especially OBCs and Dalits.

Earlier, Brahmins held a limited presence in Congress politics. Later, M G Ramachandran strengthened outreach through AIADMK and attracted Brahmin backing.

J Jayalalithaa balanced ideology with selective inclusion. Candidates like Rama Ramnathan and R Nataraj reflected this accommodation, with Nataraj winning from Mylapore in 2016.

After Jayalalithaa’s demise in 2016, Brahmin voters reportedly shifted towards the BJP. However, the party has chosen not to field Brahmin candidates this time to avoid an ‘anti-Dravidian’ perception.

Political analyst Ram Manivannan observed that Brahmin elites often prefer advisory influence over electoral participation. He also questioned the BJP’s strategy.

Smaller parties have attempted to attract Brahmin voters. Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi has fielded six Brahmin candidates, including four women.

Vijay’s Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam has nominated two candidates from Mylapore and Srirangam.

Tamil Nadu’s politics remains centred on non-Brahmin groups such as Thevars, Gounders, and Mudaliars. The absence of Brahmin candidates highlights their limited electoral clout.

The Dravidian focus on social justice has expanded opportunities for OBCs and Dalits, but it has also reduced Brahmin representation.

The outcome of the April 23, 2026, polls will determine the impact of this strategy.
