NITI Aayog Launches Hackathon To Accelerate Adoption Of Zero-Emission Trucks In India

NITI Aayog announced the initiation of the GearShift challenge on Sunday under its e-FAST India initiative, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, Smart Freight Centre India, CALSTART/Drive to Zero, and WRI India.

The hackathon aims to stimulate innovative business models for the widespread adoption of zero-emission trucks (ZETs) in India, addressing significant economic and environmental challenges, NITI Aayog stated.

Participants including students, transport practitioners, academics, and researchers will craft inventive business models tackling technical, operational, and financial barriers associated with electric truck adoption.

Teams will initially submit business models addressing specific barriers, supported by strategic insights and research. Shortlisted teams will then present detailed models with implementation roadmaps, under mentorship from industry leaders to ensure practical and impactful outcomes.

India’s freight sector, crucial for delivering goods to over 1.4 billion people, heavily relies on road transport which accounts for 55% of annual diesel consumption and 40% of CO2 emissions from road transport, NITI Aayog highlighted.

Emphasizing the importance of transitioning to sustainable solutions, NITI Aayog underscored that electrifying freight transportation is pivotal in reducing emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing energy security.

The GearShift Challenge is positioned as a significant step towards sustainable freight transportation in India. This will leverage participant creativity and expertise to foster practical solutions that benefit the economy and the environment.
