NewsClick Case: Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty placed under judicial custody for 21 days

Prabir Purkayastha, the founder of NewsClick, and Amit Chakraborty, the HR director, appeared in Patiala House Court on Friday. Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty’s judicial custody has been extended by the court until December 22 while it hears the case filed under the UAPA.

Following the conclusion of their judicial custody, Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty were produced in court. Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty were arrested in connection with cases filed under the UAPA, which is an anti-terrorism law.

Delhi Police had detained Prabir Purkayastha, the founder of Newsclick, and Amit Chakraborty, the HR director, in relation to the funding case of the digital news website. After the raid, the police Special Cell reportedly sealed Newsclick’s office as part of their investigation into foreign funding, according to officials.

According to the FIR, a large amount of money to the news portal came from China to disrupt India’s sovereignty and create disaffection against the country. The FIR alleged that Purkayastha had conspired with the People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism (PADS) group to disrupt the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
