National Science Day: Amit Shah Praises Scientists For Innovation And Research

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday extended greetings to scientists and researchers across the country on the occasion of National Science Day, commending their commitment to innovation and nation-building.

Taking to X, Shah posted, “Greetings to all our scientists, researchers on #NationalScienceDay. Your quest lights our path shaping solutions for a better future. May this day renew our zest and resolve to innovate, build and craft destiny of our choice.”

India observes National Science Day on February 28 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by eminent physicist CV Raman in 1928.

The pioneering work on the scattering of light later earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Asian to receive a Nobel in the sciences and placing Indian science firmly on the global map.

Celebrated annually, the day commemorates Raman’s groundbreaking contribution and has evolved into a nationwide initiative to promote scientific temper, encourage research and innovation, and inspire young minds to pursue careers in science and technology.

The Department of Science and Technology, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, is hosting this year’s national-level celebrations at Vigyan Bhawan. The programme opened with special lectures chaired by Principal Scientific Adviser Professor Ajay Kumar Sood.

Expert talks include Dr Shubha V Iyengar on indigenous aerospace and defence technologies, Dr K Balasubramanian on critical metals and materials, and Shri Shashi S Vempati on direct-to-mobile broadcasting innovation.

A panel discussion examining the intersection of science and public policy is also part of the agenda.

Participants from institutions such as NITI Aayog, the Indian National Science Academy, CSIR institutions, CSTEP and IGSTC are deliberating on aligning scientific research with national development goals.

Sessions on communicating science in Indian languages and interactive engagements titled Face to Face with Scientists are also being held, reinforcing the day’s focus on scientific thinking, indigenous innovation and inclusive participation, particularly of women in STEM fields.
