As political activity intensifies in Mumbai ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, a strong demand from within the Muslim community has brought fresh momentum to the debate on representation.
Qari Abrar Jamal, National President of Jamiat Himayat-ul-Islam, has placed a clear and uncompromising demand before the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction).
Qari Abrar Jamal said that his organisation supported the election of three MPs in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and played a significant role in securing victories in ten Assembly seats.
Referring to the upcoming BMC polls, he stated that if the Muslim community elects corporators with its support, it should also have a Muslim Mayor in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
He urged Uddhav Thackeray to make a public announcement on this demand at the earliest.
Qari Abrar Jamal warned that failure to do so would lead to visible anger within the Muslim community during the forthcoming elections. He further said that the Muslim community needs to understand that many political parties across the country have often tried to appease Muslims through hollow promises and assurances.
If the same approach remains in Maharashtra, he said, Muslims should distance themselves from such politics.
Stating his position unequivocally, Qari Abrar Jamal said, “A favour must be returned with a favour. We have fulfilled our responsibility by extending support; now it is their turn to repay this trust and debt.”
On the same issue, Maulana Luqman Nadwi, spokesperson of Companion of Peace & Justice – Mumbai and a prominent figure in the city’s religious and political circles, also shared his views.
He said the Muslim community has actively participated in the democratic process and now expects honesty and fulfilment of promises from the leaders it supported.
He stressed that assurances during elections are not enough, and that meaningful representation on the ground is essential to maintain the community’s trust.
Maulana Nadwi added that if political parties fail to take Muslim expectations seriously, the political consequences will inevitably follow.
The statements ahead of the BMC elections have triggered a new debate in Maharashtra’s political landscape, with all eyes now on how Uddhav Thackeray responds.
