Mumbai Police Deny Kunal Kamra’s Request For More Time; Second Summons To Be Issued

Mumbai Police have declined comedian Kunal Kamra’s request for a one-week extension to appear before authorities in connection with an ongoing investigation.

Kamra’s lawyer had submitted the request in person at Khar Police Station, along with a written response, but officials refused the plea.

The Khar Police are now preparing to send a second summons to Kamra under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Earlier, the police summoned the stand-up comic and asked him to appear before the investigating officer on Tuesday.

The case stems from an FIR originally registered by MIDC Police over remarks made by Kamra during a stand-up show.

It was later transferred to the Khar Police for further investigation.

Kamra’s performance triggered political backlash after a controversial joke referencing the word ‘gaddar’ (traitor), allegedly directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The joke sparked outrage among political leaders, several of whom demanded immediate action against Kamra.

Kunal Kamra Responds With New Video

In response, the comedian released a new video on Tuesday, mocking Shiv Sena workers for damaging The Habitat, the Mumbai venue where he had performed.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar responded, saying CM Devendra Fadnavis had already addressed the issue and assured that legal action would follow.

Speaking in the Assembly on Monday, CM Fadnavis criticized Kamra’s performance and comments, asserting that the government would not allow the misuse of freedom of expression.

The Chief Minister stated, “We appreciate humour and satire. We accept political satire, but we do not accept freedom of expression if it leads to tyranny.”

He called Kamra’s show ‘low-quality comedy’ and accused the performer of deliberately stirring controversy.

“This artist makes statements against the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice; he wants to gain fame by creating controversy. He targeted Eknath Shinde and staged a low-quality comedy,” CM Fadnavis noted.

He further added that the people – not comedians – will judge whether Eknath Shinde is a traitor or a selfish person.
