Money Laundering Case: Bombay HC Denies NCP Leader Nawab Malik Bail On Medical Grounds

The plea for interim medical bail by former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik was rejected by the Bombay High Court on Thursday. He was associated with an alleged money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Nawab Malik is currently receiving medical treatment in a private hospital in judicial custody. He had approached the High Court seeking bail on medical grounds, citing a chronic kidney disease and other health ailments. Additionally, he sought bail on the merits of the case.

Justice Anuja Prabhudessai, while delivering the order, stated that Nawab Malik’s plea for release on bail based on the merits of the case would be heard after two weeks.

Amit Desai, the counsel representing Malik, argued that his client’s health had deteriorated over the past eight months and he was in stage 2 to stage 3 of a chronic kidney disease. Desai urged the court to grant bail to Malik, emphasizing the critical nature of his health condition and warning that keeping him in stressful conditions could be fatal.

On the other hand, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, representing the ED, opposed the bail plea, stating that Malik was already receiving medical treatment in a hospital of his choice.

The ED’s case against Malik is based on an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency against Dawood Ibrahim, a designated global terrorist and a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, and his associates under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
