Meghalaya Records Highest HIV Cases In India: Minister

Meghalaya has recorded the highest number of HIV cases in India, with 10,293 people currently receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) as of January 2026, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla informed the state Assembly on Wednesday.

The disclosure followed a question from National People’s Party legislator Mehtab Chandee A Sangma from Gambegre.

Over the past decade, Meghalaya recorded 749 HIV/AIDS-related deaths, with East Khasi Hills highest at 435, followed by West Jaintia Hills (123) and East Jaintia Hills (90).

Shylla clarified that opportunistic infections, not HIV/AIDS, caused the fatalities. He noted that authorities must maintain confidentiality, obtain consent for testing, and cannot compel treatment, while social stigma limits testing and care.

Despite these challenges, the government is ramping up awareness campaigns to encourage early detection and ART adherence.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the state cabinet approved a five-year mission-mode programme, allocating Rs 25 crore to expand testing, strengthen manpower, and enhance outreach.

Shylla highlighted collaboration with community institutions and the Assembly HIV/AIDS forum.

Legislators donated a vehicle to support people living with HIV.

“HIV is no longer a death sentence; it can be treated, allowing dignified lives,” he said.

Meghalaya operates 392 ICTCs and four mobile units, with the programme aiming to extend services to remote areas.

These initiatives underscore the state’s proactive approach, prioritising care, confidentiality, and community engagement while curbing new infections.
