Meghalaya CM Meets PM Modi To Review State Development Strategy

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday to review the state’s development progress and future priorities.

The meeting focused on Meghalaya’s growth trajectory, upcoming projects, and areas requiring continued assistance from the Union government.

Chief Minister Sangma thanked the Prime Minister for granting the meeting and conveyed the gratitude of Meghalaya’s people for his wishes on Statehood Day.

He also acknowledged the Prime Minister’s recognition of Meghalaya’s living heritage. Sangma highlighted the national appreciation and global nomination of the Living Root Bridge Cultural Landscape, which has showcased indigenous knowledge and sustainable practices worldwide.

Updating the Prime Minister on recent progress, the Chief Minister underlined Meghalaya’s steady economic expansion and improvement in key human development indicators.

He pointed to measurable gains in maternal health and overall well-being. He attributed these outcomes to targeted interventions and strong community-driven programmes.

Economic & Social Progress

Sangma outlined steps taken to strengthen the rural economy. These included establishing large processing units and improving market access to help farmers increase incomes.

He also briefed the Prime Minister on progress in the New Shillong city project. The initiative aims to create a modern and sustainable urban centre to support long-term growth.

Tourism development featured prominently in the discussion. Sangma explained how private investment and community-led models have expanded tourism while protecting local culture and ecology.

He also informed the Prime Minister about preparations for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027.

The event will help upgrade sports infrastructure and raise Meghalaya’s national profile.

The meeting included strategic deliberations on future growth. Discussions covered sustaining momentum in smaller North Eastern states, enhancing capital investment support, and increasing the ceiling for Externally Aided Projects.

Other focus areas included infrastructure expansion, fiscal empowerment, and long-term measures to strengthen Meghalaya’s economic base.

The Chief Minister submitted detailed documents outlining the state’s progress and vision.

These included a development report, Vision 2032 roadmap, and proposals aligned with the national goal of Viksit Bharat.

Prime Minister Modi reviewed the submissions and assured continued support for Meghalaya’s development ambitions, Sangma said.
