MEA Expresses Deep Concern Over Escalating Iran-Gulf Conflict; Prioritises Safety Of Indian Nationals

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the continuing conflict in Iran and the Gulf region, which began on 28 February 2026.

In its official statement, the MEA recalled that India had earlier urged all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritise the safety of civilians.

The Ministry noted with regret that the situation has deteriorated significantly during the holy month of Ramadan.

What began as a limited confrontation has intensified in recent days and spread to other nations, leading to mounting casualties and widespread destruction.

According to the MEA, the escalating violence has severely disrupted normal life and economic activities across the region.

As a proximate neighbour with critical stakes in regional stability and security, India views these developments with serious anxiety.

Nearly one crore Indian citizens live and work in the Gulf region. The MEA emphasised that their safety and well-being remain of utmost priority. India cannot remain unaffected by developments that negatively impact its nationals abroad.

The Ministry also highlighted concerns regarding trade and energy supply chains that traverse the region. Any major disruption, it warned, could have serious consequences for the Indian economy.

India firmly opposed attacks on merchant shipping, especially in light of reports that some Indian nationals have lost their lives or remain missing in recent days.

In this backdrop, India strongly reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy to secure an early end to the conflict. The MEA expressed grief over the loss of lives and underscored the need for an immediate de-escalation.

Indian Embassies and Consulates in affected countries remain in close contact with Indian nationals and community organisations. They continue issuing regular advisories and extending assistance to those stranded.

The Government of India remains engaged with regional governments and key international partners. It will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation and take appropriate decisions in the national interest.
