Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday described India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and signalled Canada’s intent to deepen economic collaboration. He affirmed that stronger partnerships would generate fresh opportunities for Canadian workers and enterprises.
Posting a video of his arrival in Mumbai on X, Carney stated that India leads global growth among major economies. He confirmed plans to meet business leaders and build alliances that unlock commercial prospects for both nations.
PM Carney arrived in Mumbai with his wife, Diana Fox Carney, for his first official visit to India from 27 February to 2 March.
Maharashtra’s Minister of Protocol and Marketing, Jayakumar Rawal, received him at the airport.
During his Mumbai engagements, Carney will interact with Indian and Canadian chief executives, industry representatives, financial specialists, innovators, academics, and Canadian pension funds operating in India.
The visit prioritises investment flows and strategic business linkages.
The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the Canadian leader, calling the visit a meaningful step towards reinforcing bilateral relations.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted shared democratic principles, robust people-to-people ties, and expanding cooperation across sectors as the foundation of the partnership.
After concluding meetings in Mumbai, Carney will travel to New Delhi on Sunday evening. He will hold delegation-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on 2 March.
Both leaders will assess progress under the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. They will build upon earlier interactions in Kananaskis in June 2025 and Johannesburg in November 2025.
Discussions will cover trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and community linkages. They will also exchange views on regional and global developments and attend the India–Canada CEOs Forum.
The MEA noted that the visit comes at a crucial phase in the normalisation of bilateral ties.
Both Prime Ministers have committed to advancing a balanced and constructive relationship grounded in mutual respect and economic complementarities.
Ahead of the visit, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office described India as a powerhouse in global commerce and technology.
In 2024, India ranked as Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching 30.8 billion US dollars.
At the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last November, Prime Minister Modi and Carney set a target of 50 billion US dollars in bilateral trade by 2030.
PM Modi also noted strong interest from Canadian pension funds in Indian firms.
