Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the revered Somnath Temple in Gujarat, participating in rituals including ‘Abhishek’ and ‘Aarti’.
His visit coincided with the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, a festival celebrating the temple’s thousand-year journey and 75 years since its modern reconstruction in 1951.
Addressing a large gathering at Sadbhavna Maidan, PM Modi urged people to remember the temple’s history for the courage, determination, and sacrifices that rebuilt it, not just for the repeated attacks.
“This festival is not meant only to remember the destruction a thousand years ago. It is a celebration of a 1,000-year journey and India’s existence and pride,” he said.
Drawing parallels between the temple and the nation, PM Modi stated that just as invaders repeatedly tried to destroy Somnath, India too faced similar challenges—but neither succumbed.
He recounted historical episodes, from Mahmud of Ghazni’s first attack in 1026 to invasions by Alauddin Khilji, Sultan Mahmud Begda, and Aurangzeb, highlighting the resilience of local rulers and devotees who rebuilt the shrine time and again.
“The history of Somnath is not of destruction, but of victory, reconstruction, and the selflessness of our ancestors. Centuries of struggle, resistance, and unwavering faith kept it alive,” he added.
PM Modi also reflected on the spiritual significance of Somnath, linking it to Lord Shiva as ‘Mrityunjaya’, the conqueror of death, whose presence imbues the temple with eternal power.
The Prime Minister said that those who attacked the temple have now faded into history, while Somnath stands tall, symbolising dharma, devotion, and India’s enduring cultural heritage.
He urged citizens to honour this legacy and use the occasion to strengthen India’s identity and showcase its centuries-old heritage to the world.
