Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Punjab’s ‘Nav Trinjan’ initiative for promoting organic cotton cultivation and reviving traditional weaving.
Speaking during the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi said the initiative was transforming lives while preserving India’s traditional skills.
PM Modi said traditional crafts had shaped India’s identity for generations. He added that adapting these skills to modern needs could create opportunities while protecting cultural heritage.
Led by the Kheti Virasat Mission, Nav Trinjan promotes natural farming and traditional agricultural practices in Punjab’s Malwa region.
Farmers cultivate organic cotton without chemicals and grow naturally coloured cotton, reducing the need for chemical dyes in yarn and fabrics.
The Prime Minister highlighted the environmental benefits of these sustainable methods. He further praised the initiative’s weaving school, which helps pass traditional skills to younger generations and creates livelihood opportunities for women.
PM Modi cited Ramandeep Kaur, who previously worked as a labourer but became a skilled weaver after receiving training. He further mentioned Rekha Rani, who had never seen a handloom before joining the school. She later learnt weaving and produced a shawl that was presented to the President of India.
The Prime Minister highlighted the journeys of Suneha Devi and Rajini Kaur. Suneha Devi, who previously worked in other people’s homes, now produces fabrics on a handloom.
Rajini Kaur, who once depended on agricultural labour, has developed weaving skills that help her support her household.
PM Modi said women trained under the initiative were using indigenous organic cotton yarn to make shawls, towels and other textiles. Their work was improving livelihoods while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
PM Modi praised the Nav Trinjan team’s dedication, highlighting its efforts to promote sustainable farming, traditional weaving and women’s livelihoods.
