Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Praises Assam’s Hargila Army For Conservation Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Assam’s women-led ‘Hargila Army’ for turning age-old superstition into a successful conservation movement.

Addressing the nation during the 135th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said the initiative showed how scientific awareness and community participation can replace fear with understanding and inspire meaningful social change.

The Prime Minister said superstition has existed in society for centuries and often prevents people from recognising the truth. He noted that fear can overshadow logic and facts, but determined individuals can overcome such beliefs through science, knowledge and experience.

Citing the example of the endangered greater adjutant stork, locally known as the ‘Hargila’, PM Modi said the bird plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance by naturally cleaning the environment.

Despite its importance, the bird was long considered inauspicious in parts of Assam, leading many people to destroy trees containing its nests.

Calling it unfortunate that a bird beneficial to nature became a victim of superstition, the Prime Minister praised conservation biologist Purnima Devi Barman for changing public perception of the species. He said she reached out to local women, explained the ecological significance of the bird and inspired them to take ownership of its protection.

PM Modi said the campaign gradually evolved into a powerful community movement, with the once-feared bird becoming a symbol of pride across villages in Assam.

PM Modi said the ‘Hargila Army’ shows how community-led efforts can protect biodiversity and drive positive social change through scientific awareness.
