Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted an inspiring example of grassroots innovation from Manipur during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
The Prime Minister shared the story of Moirangthem Seth, a young resident of the state, and praised his efforts in bringing solar power to hundreds of homes in remote areas.
Recalling the popular saying, ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’, PM Modi said Moirangthem Seth proved its relevance through his determination and innovative thinking.
He noted that the region where Moirangthem lived faced persistent electricity shortages, making daily life difficult for residents.
To overcome this challenge, Moirangthem focused on finding a local and sustainable solution.
Recognising Manipur’s favourable conditions for solar energy generation, he decided to tap into this natural advantage and promote the use of solar power in his community.
The Prime Minister said Moirangthem launched a campaign to install solar panels, which has since transformed the lives of people in his area.
As a result of this initiative, solar electricity has now reached hundreds of households, providing a reliable and clean source of power.
PM Modi emphasised that the impact of this effort went far beyond lighting homes. He said Moirangthem used solar energy to strengthen essential services and improve livelihoods, particularly in areas that previously lacked stable electricity.
Highlighting the wider benefits of the initiative, the Prime Minister noted that several health centres in Manipur are now powered by solar energy due to Moirangthem’s efforts.
This has helped improve healthcare delivery in remote regions, ensuring uninterrupted services even in areas with limited infrastructure.
PM Modi added that the initiative has also positively affected livelihoods.
Women in Manipur have benefited significantly, while local fishermen and artists have received support through improved access to electricity, enabling them to work more efficiently and sustainably.
The Prime Minister also referred to the government’s flagship PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which financial assistance of around ₹75,000 to ₹80,000 is provided to beneficiary families for installing rooftop solar panels.
He explained that the scheme aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to nearly one crore households, while promoting energy self-sufficiency.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries can also earn additional income by selling surplus electricity back to the power grid, further strengthening household incomes.
While noting that Moirangthem’s efforts were personal, PM Modi said such initiatives give fresh momentum to India’s solar and renewable energy campaigns.
He extended his best wishes to the young innovator, describing his work as an inspiration for others to adopt clean energy solutions and contribute to sustainable development across the country.
