Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Highlights Kashmir’s Traditional Vaghu Mats

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the renewed popularity of Kashmir’s traditional Vaghu mat during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat. He described the handmade craft as an important part of the Valley’s cultural identity and appreciated the dedication of those working to preserve it.

The Prime Minister said determination and passion can help people achieve remarkable results, adding that the revival of Vaghu mat-making reflects the power of commitment towards protecting traditional skills.

Key Highlights

PM Modi explained that artisans make Vaghu mats using natural materials such as reeds and paddy straw sourced from Kashmir’s marshy areas.

Craftsmen dry and organise these materials before carefully hand-weaving them into the final product.

PM Modi said producing a single Vaghu mat requires nearly four days of work by two artisans.

The Prime Minister highlighted the craft’s unique qualities, noting that these mats provide comfort by keeping homes cool in summer and warm in winter. He added that Vaghu mats once held an important place in Kashmiri households but gradually became less common over the years.

The Prime Minister praised Srinagar-based artisan Ghulam Hussain and his daughter Tanzila for their efforts to bring back the traditional craft. He said the duo took the initiative to restore Vaghu mat-making despite facing several difficulties.

PM Modi noted that Ghulam Hussain, who belongs to a humble background, remained committed to protecting the craft and inspired others to participate in the revival movement. He added that Hussain helped expand the reach of Vaghu mats and received support from local authorities in his mission.

PM Modi said Vaghu mats are now gaining wider recognition and reaching markets beyond Kashmir. He expressed pride in the artisans and communities contributing to the preservation of this traditional craft.

Linking the initiative with the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement, the Prime Minister urged citizens to support indigenous products and include Kashmir’s Vaghu mats in their homes.
