Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Reaches Out To Anna Hazare Following Lokayukta Bill Approval
Following the passage of the Lokayukta Bill 2022 by the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reached out to social activist Anna Hazare in a phone conversation. The bill, which includes the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers under the purview of the anti-corruption ombudsman, had previously been passed by the state assembly during the winter session of the previous year. Initially met with objections in the Council, the bill underwent revisions based on recommendations before being unanimously passed.
Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, after incorporating suggestions, reintroduced the bill in the Upper House, where it received unanimous approval on Friday. Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that the draft had been formulated through extensive discussions between officials and a team led by social activist Anna Hazare, integrating provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act.

The conversation between Shinde and Hazare revealed insights into the Lokayukta’s expanded scope, encompassing the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers. Fadnavis emphasized transparency in the Lokayukta appointment process, involving a search committee consisting of the Chief Minister, both Deputy Chief Ministers, Speaker, Chairpersons, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and Council, and the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Fadnavis further explained that if the Lokayukta identifies merit in a complaint against the Chief Minister, preliminary action can be initiated, requiring permission from the Speaker for prosecution.
During the Council discussion, Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap emphasized the importance of maintaining impartiality, while Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sachin Ahir called for immediate provision of necessary infrastructure for the Lokayukta.
